What Do Professional Jewelers Use to Clean Jewelry?

Have your dazzling diamond or precious metal jewelry lost its former shine? Unfortunately, pieces of jewelry may lose their shine and glamor in time. Daily grime and dust combined with water can accumulate in your favorite jewelry and cause them to look old and dull.

Try as hard as you may, without professional methods of cleaning jewelry, there is nothing much you can do to make them shine as bright as before. For that reason, it is important to regularly take your jewelry to a professional jeweler for cleaning and polishing.

Besides, a professional jeweler can check and ensure that your diamond is safely mounted in its place. Of course, there are things you can do at home to maintain your jewelry. However, these only clean your jewelry to some point.

So, although cleaning jewelry at home may help you maintain its glimmer longer, we still recommend you have it professionally cleaned on a periodical basis.

What do professional jewelers use to clean jewelry? They use professional materials and tools to thoroughly clean jewelry. Also, they have the necessary knowledge to preserve the original form of jewelry. As a result, a professional jeweler can make your precious stone look brand-new as before.

What Jewelers Do to Clean a Diamond

Diamonds are loved because of their shiny structure. The truth is, they shine even with dirt on them. Yet, they still become duller with daily grime. Jewelers use ultrasonic cleaners with high-frequency sound waves and chemicals to professionally remove dirt off of diamonds.

Why not break it down to steps for a better understanding?

Professional Jewelry Cleaning Process Step by Step

Jeweler polishing jewelry

Step #1

The first step is to put and soak the jewelry in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. The high vibrancy of ultrasonic waves with a chemical cleaning solution dislodges the tiny dirt particles adhering to the metal or gemstones.

Step #2

The second step is polishing. In this step, the jeweler polishes the jewelry with a wheel spinning at high speed. It helps the jeweler to remove all the scratches and abrasions your jewelry has, and restore its original form.

Step #3

The last step of professional jewelry cleaning is steam cleaning. When cleaning the whole piece of jewelry, the jeweler typically washes it under a strong blast of steam to get rid of all the grime and dirt. Also, it is widely accepted that steam brightens further up the metal.

How to Clean Your Sterling Silver Jewelry At Home

Cleaning your jewelry at home is easy and can done with just a few ingredients you probably already have at home – baking soda, hot water, aluminum foil and vinegar

Step # 1: Line a Bowl with Aluminum Foil: Take a heat-resistant bowl and line it with aluminum foil, but important here, make sure that the shiny side is facing up. This is where the magic happens!" The aluminum foil creates a chemical reaction that helps remove tarnish from sterling silver.

Step #2: Arrange the Jewelry. Next, take your tarnished sterling silver jewelry and arrange it on the aluminum foil. Make sure each piece has direct contact with the foil.

Step # 3: Sprinkle Baking Soda. Now, grab that baking soda and generously sprinkle it over your jewelry. This humble ingredient is going to help us banish that tarnish.

Step # 4: Heat Up the Vinegar. In a separate container, heat some white vinegar. It doesn't need to boil, but we want it nice and warm. This is the secret sauce for our cleaning solution!

Step # 5: Pour Over the Jewelry. Carefully pour the hot vinegar over the jewelry. You might see a little fizz – that's the chemical reaction working its magic!

Step #6: Let It Soak "Now, let your jewelry soak in this vinegar and baking soda spa for about 1 to 3 minutes. You'll notice the tarnish transferring from the silver to the aluminum foil.

Step  #7: Rinse and Dry Time to give your jewelry a rinse under warm running water. Make sure to get rid of any residue. Then, pat it dry gently with a soft, lint-free cloth.

And there you have it! Your sterling silver jewelry is looking as good as new. This method is perfect for bringing back that beautiful shine.
