What are the differences among the metals in your products?

Let’s begin with the term, karat. Karat is the unit used to measure the purity or fineness of gold. Golden jewelry can be as high as 24 karats. The karat of a given jewel can either be multiplied by 4,1667 or divided by 24 to get the percentage of gold it contains.

To illustrate, pure gold is designated 24k, or 100% gold. 18k contains 75% gold (18/24=0.75) and 14k contains 58.5% gold (14/24=0.585). The reason behind adding alloys to gold is to make them stronger. 24k is very soft, making it not an ideal choice for everyday wear. Thus, many jewelers opt to work with 14k and 18k both of which are very strong and can be worn on a daily basis.

Moreover, 10k gold is 41.7% pure, whereas 14k white gold contains 58.5% pure gold and 41.5% alloys. 14k’s natural color is off white, so it gets plated in rhodium for a brighter and whiter outlook. 14k white gold is a rather durable metal and is the go-to option for anyone who would fancy white-toned jewelry and maintain cost-effectiveness.

14k rose gold is also referred to as pink gold or red gold. It has a rosy hue which might vary from one jeweler to another. Some can be closer to orange while others pinker. Rose gold is alloyed with copper to give it a rosy allure. 14k rose gold is a great metal for everyday wear. 14k yellow gold is pale yellow or golden in color. It is a great alternative for everyday wear. 18k white gold contains 75% gold and 25% alloys. As 18k white gold has more gold in its contents, it will be slightly softer than 14k. 18k rose gold has a very rich color. It is not necessarily pinker, as it actually contains more gold but not more copper. It is best described as a brownish red.

18k yellow gold has a very beautiful color as it is very rich in terms of its precious material content and more yellow than 14k yellow gold. We recommend 18k yellow gold if you are going for a more saturated color for your piece.

Sterling Silver consists of 92.5% silver and other metals, mostly copper, for the remaining 7.5%. This is the reason why Sterling Silver is popularly referred to as 925 Sterling Silver or just 925 Silver.

The reason silver needs to be combined with other metals is that it is very soft, making it difficult to work with. A bit of hardness has to be introduced by adding other metals.

Why should I provide my real email and phone number when I order? I don’t want spam.

We hate spam, too! Your information remains safe and private with us, and we wouldn’t ever want to spam you. It’s important for our customer service team to have means of communication with you about your order so that nothing surprising happens! Inaccurate credit card information is a finger’s slip away and occasionally your selection is so stellar that it’s on backorder. We also want to make sure you get our email confirmation as a record of the order. Working with customers makes us happy, we take great joy in helping you design your own jewelry through contact with us, and we just need a way to keep the lines of communication open.

Will the gold-plating on my jewelry fade away very quickly?

It should be noted that gold-plated jewelry must be used with care and kept away from water, moisture, perfume, lotion, etc.; otherwise it will begin to lose its color and will need to be re-plated. Gold plated jewelry should be used, cleaned, and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and they must be re-plated on a regular basis.

How best do I care for my plated jewelry?

The generic methods to maintain the pristine outlook of your plated jewelry are similar, regardless of the plating material such as gold, rose gold, or rhodium, as follows:

✔ Make sure to wash and clean your hands before putting on or taking off plated jewelry.

✔ For gold-plated earrings, put them on only after applying your perfume.

✔ Avoid exposing your plated jewelry to fragrance or spray deodorant.

✔ Put your plated jewelry on after you have applied lotion or makeup.

✔ While cooking or preparing food, remember to take your plated rings and/or bracelets off before chopping vegetables with highly acidic content such as tomatoes and fruits such as lemons.

✔ You might as well want to remove your plated jewelry before changing the junior's diaper. Your baby still has time to learn not to contaminate mommy’s precious rings!

✔ Avoid rubbing plated bracelets and necklaces against one another.

✔ Try to protect plated rings from dropping onto countertops with an impact, or rubbing them against keys buried in pockets and purses.

✔ Do not swim in your plated jewelry. Do not wear your plated jewelry during sports activities or when you’ll be sweating profusely.

✔ Be gentle to your plated jewelry whilst cleaning and try your best to refrain from rubbing it harshly.

✔ Store your gold-plated jewelry in a pouch made of soft cloth to separate and prevent it from contacting other jewelry.

How best do I care for my sterling silver jewelry designed with or without black oxidation?

The generic methods to maintain the brilliance and lifespan of your sterling silver jewelry are similar, regardless of black oxidation in their design, as follows:

✔ Please remember to remove your ring before swimming in chlorine or salt water, using household cleaning products, showering or applying lotions to avoid soapy buildup, and gardening, working out, or other physical labor.

✔ Blackened finishes applied to the recesses of a design hold their color best when cleaned with a soft brush and mild, unscented dish soap. For heavier cleaning or scratch removal, it’s recommended to visit a nearby jewelry store.

✔ Store your jewelry in a clean, dry place, or in airtight ziplock bags to prevent the development of tarnish. Storing multiple pieces of jewelry in separate pouches is also useful so that they do not scratch neighboring pieces.

✔ Oxidized finishes have the longest life on pieces that come into minimal contact with other metallic objects.

✔ To preserve the brilliance and lifespan of your ring, it’s best to treat it like the unique treasure it is.

✔ Have your fine jewelry professionally cleaned & checked annually.

Help! My finger is turning green/black/red from a ring.

First, Minimalist Designs uses only the highest quality sterling silver and 10k, 14k, and 18k gold in jewelry. And while skin reactions to our jewelry are extremely uncommon as we take every measure to prevent it, we receive feedback from our customers on the occurrence of skin reactions from jewelry purchased elsewhere. These reactions occur for a variety of reasons.

As noted above, skin reactions might occur due to wearing your jewelry too frequently without removing it. Chemicals and even natural ingredients can get caught between the jewelry and the skin, therefore causing reactions. Generally, if a ring starts giving you problems after weeks/months/years of wearing it with no concerns, this strongly points to an outside agent. Cosmetics, lotions, soap, cleaning chemicals, etc can all get trapped under a ring and cause skin reactions like redness, swelling and even blistering.

If a new ring turns your finger green or black, we suggest removing the ring and cleaning it per the methods described in the user’s manual, taking great care not to leave any residue. Sometimes there are polishing compounds that may not have been removed thoroughly before sale. These can react with skin. If your skin continues to react or the reaction is only on the palm side of your finger, it could be a reaction to the solder used for sizing. In this case, we may need to replace your ring or cast one in size so that solder is not used. Please contact us and we will discuss these options.
